Free Burma - New York City Rally

The streets of New York City echoed with a roar for the freedom of Aung San Suu Kyi and Burma with Amnesty International’s Get on the Bus event on Friday, April 16th 2010. This annual day of action and education is the largest grassroots self-organized event that Amnesty International USA has all around the country. Spearheaded by Amnesty International's Group 133, based out of Somerville, Massachusetts, approximately 1000 student activists gathered from around the USA to call for human rights in Burma, Sri Lanka, Iran, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Tibet.

Free Burma Alliance's (FBA) first fundraiser and advocacy event was a huge success. Hosted by FBA's Executive Director, filmmaker, Jeremy Taylor, the event was held at the world famous Friar's Club in New York City. Nearly two hundred people, including the press, attended.

he military regime in Burma, headed by Senior General Than Shwe, is waging a campaign of terror against its civilians in violation of international law. The regime continues to deploy torture, sexual violence, forced labor, murder and imprisonment as tools to rule over the country. These crimes have been well documented by the United Nations and various international organizations and pose a threat to international peace and security.

Prosthetic support for landmine Victims

Burma is one of the most heavily mined areas in the world, with approximately 1,500 landmine victims, a third of them civilians. According to the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL), Burma ranks among top in the world for the most extensive use of landmines. The military regime in the country has refused to sign the international treaty banning landmines - clearly sending the message that they have no intention of ensuring that civilians do not continue to be casualties and targets of war.
