New Blood School

One of Burma Relief’s most pressing projects for funding is the New Blood School in Mae Sot, Thailand (along the Burmese border). The school currently provides educational and vocational skills for 305 Burmese refugee children.

During the first week of March, Jeremy Taylor, along with a delegation of international supporters, toured the school and provided a needs assessment of the situation. The level of organization and staff was outstanding given the limited resources that were available. The children had a keen interest in learning multiple languages, history and mathematics. The underfinanced teaching staff showed exuberance when explaining lessons on a chalkboard. Sadly, the school cannot afford schoolbooks and children sometimes have to share pencils to complete their assignments. At lunchtime, the group was amazed how the children lined up with smiles to receive a bowl of watered rice to last them through the day of classes. As joyous as the children seemed, we were sadden to see the sleeping quarters of the displaced children with no parents. Again, a lack of funding forced numerous children to sleep on wood tables.
